Effective listening is a key element of leading in an empathetic way which supports staff wellbeing. But we live and work in a busy world and one involving many distractions which can make it difficult to give others your full attention. So what are some steps we can take to improve our listening? First, we must create time for our conversations with others so we can engage fully with them. This means not holding conversations when there is not the time for them or when in the middle of another task.
It's better to defer conversations to a time when everyone can concentrate. Where the conversation is so important that it needs to happen immediately. You should stop what you are doing, turn and give your full attention to the other person. Second, we need to ensure we are listening with our whole body. This means: Listening with your eyes and seeing the other person's body language and facial expressions. Listening with your ears and noting the words and tone being used. Listening with your intuition and considering if there is anything that is not being said.
Listening with your heart and trying to sense what the other person is feeling. Of course, there are many ways to develop your listening skills and we explore how to listen effectively in the The Effective Listening course that you can access from your My Courses page.
