Thinking Clearly Under Pressure (TCUP)

Elite athletes and high performers in business have something in common --- they perform exceptionally well during critical moments.

Not everyone is naturally skilled at performing under pressure, but it is something that can be taught or learned. As a leader, you can help yourself and your team become adapted in any high-pressure scenarios they might engage with. This way of thinking can then be applied to new circumstances - enabling them to replicate the same effective results!

You can use a technique called Thinking Clearly Under Pressure or TCUP to learn how to be prepared and remain calm, even under pressure.

TCUP  is a process introduced by Sir Clive Woodward to the England Rugby Team, and he attributes it as a key reason why they were able to win the World Cup in 2003. He now shares this technique with organisations and individuals across the globe.

He organised regular short meetings with rules, such as the start and end time, the right people in the room, a clear agenda and an outcome needed.

He would pose specific scenarios - for example, the team are 16 to 12 points down with 4 minutes to go. Team members would come to the front and answer what they would do and were expected to answer quickly.

Then they discussed as a team and no one left until they had an agreed answer – but he insisted they finished in the allotted time to replicate pressure.

By continually doing this, and covering more and more situations and scenarios about what the other team might do, it meant that whenever they came across it in a match, they knew what to do and were able to effectively respond, rather than react.

 

Similarly, if you record and discuss every single probability that your team or yourself could face, then you will eventually create a library of pressure situations and possible action plans. For example, if you think about the possible responses during a conversation you anticipate will be challenging, you will be better prepared to deal with these responses or situations if they occur during the conversation.

 

Dealing with pressure is all about anticipating the future and tgat the action to take is thought through and that are you are  clear how you can handle situations. Without t-cup people freeze and choke or make poor decisions. But if you come across something you've experienced or even just thought about before, then you are more likely to be able to respond to them in an appropriate way.
