The Interest-Based Relational Approach was developed and published by Roger Fisher and William Ury in their nineteen eighty one book, 'Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In'. They established the process known as "principled negotiation" which encourages parties to use joint problem solving techniques, rather than positional bargaining.
As a manager, your role is more than just solving conflicts. You should strive to foster understanding between team members during conflict management by respecting their differences and appreciating the perspectives they bring — essentially creating an environment that fosters civil dialogue so everyone can maturely work together.
Here are the six guidelines for this approach.
1. Make sure that good relationships are a priority.
The goal is to maintain mutual respect throughout the process. Be respectful, remain civil, and engage in constructive discussions.
2. Separate people from problems.
Separate the individual and emotions from the issue so you can deal with problems without damaging relationships.
3. Listen carefully to different interests.
It's important to understand the needs, wants, and motivations that make someone behave in a certain way.
4. Listen first, talk second.
Listen to understand; don't listen to reply. Avoid jumping to conclusions or responding without understanding the other's position.
5. Set out the "facts."
By working together, uncover observable 'facts' and additional details that will help you to make sense of this problem and pinpoint the source.
6. Explore options together.
Decide on what you can do to resolve this for everyone. Explore all possible options and arrive at a mutually-agreed upon solution.
