Recent UK-wide statistics on the wellbeing of school staff indicate the importance of feeling appreciated and supported in the workplace. In 2022, not feeling valued was a key reason that those working in education cited when considering leaving the sector. The only reasons that overshadowed it were heavy workloads and wanting a better work-life balance.

The impact of expressing appreciation within workplaces is undoubtedly positive and its effects can be widespread. However, over 90% of the UK education workforce felt their line manager didn't trust them. Creating a culture of appreciation is a feasible cause of action that school leaders can take to create impactful, long-term improvement.

But why does appreciation matter?
Research shows that when people feel appreciated, they develop a stronger sense of belonging and are more committed to their jobs. Feeling appreciated contributes to our sense of value and encourages prosocial behaviour. Employees who are thanked for their efforts report higher levels of engagement in their work and increased motivation to work with their colleagues.

OFSTED's recent shift to focus on staff wellbeing underscores that school leaders can no longer afford to ignore the importance of appreciation. Cultivating a culture of appreciation in schools helps to create and maintain desirable work environments for staff in a variety of roles. The effects this can have include:

Decreased absenteeism
Improved employee retention
Fewer resources spent on the above
Increased morale and employee satisfaction
More effective communication
Better teaching and learning
Greater employee engagement
More positive work environments
Improved cooperation
Reduced undesirable emotions, for example, perception of injustice
