When is Anxiety normal?
Anxiety is a natural reaction to a potentially threatening situation or internal conflict. In contrast to fear, which is a response to immediate danger, anxiety is focused on things that we think may happen, like something that worries us in the present, or has potential of doing so in the future.
Anxiety is associated with vigilance in preparation for future danger. It is a natural response and it prepares us to respond appropriately to a situation in the future.
Anxiety can manifest in several ways, including:
1. Cognitive symptoms like ruminating or constantly thinking about something
2. Emotional symptoms like feeling tense, fear, worry, or dread,
3. Physical symptoms such as sweating, increased heart rate, and trembling.
Anxiety can serve 2 important purposes.
First, it alerts us and prepares ourselves for potential threats.
Second, it motivates us to take action to either avoid or resolve the potential threat.
