What exactly is Mental Health?
The World Health Organization defines mental health as:
"A state of mental wellbeing that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realise their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community."
Mental health shapes every aspect of our lives, from influencing our thoughts and emotions to shaping our connections and day-to-day activities. Our mental wellbeing plays a significant role in how we navigate the world around us.
Mental health is just physical health and any other aspect of health:
Everybody has it and we need to take care of it.
Mental health is not just the absence of disease or illness.
You can have periods of good mental health even with a mental illness. On the other hand, you can struggle or have challenges with your mental health without a diagnosis - in fact, this is a normal part of life.
Good mental health includes a range of factors, such as the ability to manage stress, build positive relationships, and experience positive emotions like joy and contentment.
Plus, it’s important to remember that mental health is not static but is a dynamic and ongoing process requiring constant attention and care. Just as we consistently maintain and improve our physical health by engaging in behaviours such as eating well and exercising regularly, we must do the same for our mental health by engaging in self-care practices, seeking support when needed, and addressing any mental health concerns promptly and appropriately.
